May 14, 2025

Private Treaty Bull Sales: Using Data Sheets to Attract Buyers

March 1, 2025

Not every producer has a large production sale. In fact, I would venture to guess that there are more smaller producers selling bulls through private treaty than there are production sales in any given year. Private treaty sales offer flexibility for both buyers and sellers, allowing producers to build relationships with customers while marketing their cattle directly from the ranch. Even those who hold production sales often move additional bulls through private treaty, making it a valuable sales avenue for operations of all sizes.

Lost Tags: Why DNA Testing is the Detective of the Cattle World

February 1, 2025

It’s a scenario every rancher dreads: you’re walking through your herd, checking your cattle, when you spot it—a calf or cow with no identification tag. That small, dangling piece of plastic, the lifeline of record-keeping and pedigree tracking, is nowhere to be found. Whether you're managing a handful of animals or a sprawling herd, the loss of a tag can set off a chain of uncertainty and frustration.

In the ever-evolving world of cattle management, staying ahead of technology is crucial for ranchers who aim to streamline operations and improve herd management. One tool that has become indispensable is the use of Electronic Identification (EID) tags. These tags have transformed how ranchers track, monitor, and manage their cattle, providing more accurate data and reducing human error. But how exactly can these tags be used, and why are they becoming the standard in livestock management?

Still, the process carries its own blend of hope and curiosity.

Optimizing Your Contemporary Groups: A Timely Reminder for Fall and Spring Calvers

September 10, 2024

Now is an ideal time for both fall and spring calving operations to focus on their contemporary groups. For fall calvers, it's a chance to think about how they will set up their groups in preparation for the new calving season. For spring calvers, it’s an opportunity to review your birth groups and finalize their contemporary groups as they prepare for weaning those calves.

Ensuring that your contemporary groups are accurately established now will help streamline data management and enhance the accuracy of future evaluations.

Staying Efficient: How to Keep Your Inventory Current

September 1, 2024

The price of culled cattle has remained strong so far this year and ranchers are taking advantage of the market.  Culling, the process of removing less productive or undesirable animals from a herd, plays a vital role in herd management. It not only helps in maintaining herd health and productivity but also facilitates genetic improvements.

By selectively culling, ranchers can focus on breeding cattle that exhibit superior traits such as higher fertility rates, better growth performance, and enhanced meat quality. These genetic enhancements are essential for ensuring long-term sustainability and competitiveness in the cattle industry.

Unleash the Power of AAA Login to help Create Reports for Sale Day

Navigating Inventory Reporting Enrollment

October 15, 2023

Earlier this year, I assisted my dad in the process of weaning calves. We gathered them from various pastures to wean them together. As I carefully backed up the trailer for the final load, it occurred to me how similar this was to the enrollment process for Inventory Reporting. Odd connection, I admit, but just like weaning calves, you shouldn't rush through it and with a bit of patience, everything falls into place.

Parentage Exclusions: Your Roadmap to Resolution

September 14, 2023

Creating a strategy to address these parentage exclusions can help alleviate your concerns and streamline the resolution process.

Tips for working with Tissue Sampling Units

August 14, 2023

Everything around us is constantly evolving. From the tractors that we drive to the equipment we pull, there seems to be new models coming out every other year. When Tissue Sampling Units, TSUs, first became available there were a lot of questions surrounding them. Is the sample just as viable as a blood card? Will the sample keep like blood cards? Are they re-useable like blood cards?

The purpose of this isn’t to advocate the use of TSUs over blood cards or hair samples, but instead give ideas to producers that are using them about ways I work with them.

Custom Animal Report, the Tractor of AAA Login

July 20, 2023

Have you ever thought about just how versatile a tractor is? In the winter it can be used to pull a grinder for feeding cows. In the summer it can be used to bale hay, and in the spring, the same tractor can be used to plant crops. It’s the same piece of equipment but depending on what is connected to it, serves a different purpose.

The Custom Animal Report (found at Reports > Interactive > Custom Animal Report) in AAA Login is the same way. At first glance, one would say, there’s a lot of data that can get returned to look at. There is a lot of truth to that, but have you thought about other ways to use the Custom Animal Report to make your processes easier?

Now is the time to take care of your calving records.

May 11, 2023

I have always loved this time of year in Missouri. The grass has greened up, leaves are back on the trees, flowers are blooming and of course, baby calves are running around in the pasture.

Life on the farm is something new each day. You get up with all the intentions of fixing the water gap or moving the cows to a new pasture, but who gets up thinking they are going to knock out their calving records for that season?
